Tips for Planning an Amazing Family Outing

Family outing

In today’s chronically busy world, it can be tough to find time to slow down for a bit, take a deep breath, and simply be with your family. Those cherishable moments don’t just happen– you have to intentionally create it. Once you’ve figured out how to get off work for the day and escape other social obligations, though, what comes next? How do you spend a free day with your family? We’ve found that the best way to make sure everyone has fun during your quality time is to create a plan. Here’s how to create the perfect plan for the perfect family outing.

Research the Venue

Before going on any days out with the family, be sure you know what you want to do. If you want your family day trip to be a great one, you need to be prepared, and the way you’ll need to prepare varies greatly depending on where you plan to spend the day.

This will also help you to set expectations for the little ones. If they’re expecting a day at the arcade but get a day out in nature, they’ll likely feel let down no matter how much fun they have. Informing them of the plan ahead of time, though, helps you set the right expectations for them, ensuring that they know what’s about to happen and can fully enjoy it.

Pack Accordingly

Once you’ve decided on your venue and informed everyone of the plan, it’s time to start packing. Once again, preparation will differ pretty heavily here depending on the type of family outing you’ve decided on.

For example, a day out at the public pool means you’ll need to pack swimsuits and sunscreen for everyone, as well as a few pool toys to keep the kids entertained. If you’re going on a day hike, however, you can forgo the swimsuits, but you’ll need sunscreen, bug spray, hiking gear, and a backpack full of food and water. To make sure you have everything, we recommend drafting up a packing list ahead of time and double-checking it before you head out the door. This ensures that you’ll never be caught unprepared for a family outing.

Look for Free Family Activities

Of course, constant family outings can get expensive, and they may just not be in the budget for you. However, there are ways to go on cheap family outings if you know where to look. Try searching the web for free or low-cost family activities to see what you find. The two ideas we mentioned above, hiking and a day at the public pool, can both be done for low or no cost if you know what you’re doing, and there are many more options available. From free admission days at museums and zoos to simply exploring the city, there are plenty of ways for you and your family to get out of the house and spend some quality time together without breaking the bank.

Pack Emergency Supplies

Packing first aid kit

While you never want to be in a situation where you need them, it’s always a good idea to pack some supplies to use if an emergency comes up. You don’t need anything excessive, but it never hurts to have the basics covered.

We recommend investing in a first-aid kit, bandages, gauze, extra water bottles, headache medicine, and any other essentials for situations that your family could run into. That way, even if something does occur, you can keep the situation from spiraling out of control, and maybe even continue your day out if the incident wasn’t too severe.

A caveat, though– first aid is no substitute for professional care. You can perform first aid, but in the case of a severe injury or allergic reaction, call emergency services and get to a hospital as soon as possible.

Schedule Regular Snack and Water Breaks

Family enjoying outing

While you may not have any trouble walking around for an entire day, it’s worth remembering that your children have much shorter legs and will likely get tired of walking faster. Once they get tired, they’ll start to get cranky, which always puts a damper on an otherwise fun family day out. To prevent this, schedule regular breaks throughout the day where you and the little ones can sit down, eat a quick snack, and rehydrate. This will keep everyone refreshed, energized, and ready to enjoy some quality time with family.
